Bing Martinez was born in Cebu, Philippines. He has an economics degree from the Ateneo de Manila and an MBA from the University of the Philippines. While in the Philippines, he worked with a thread company, a development bank and a shipping company. His home Rotary Club in Cebu is the sister club to Decatur Rotary.
Since 1979, nearly 3 billion children have received an oral polio vaccine through Rotary International and its public health partners, resulting in a 99.9% reduction in polio cases. Even though efforts to eradicate the disease have been very successful, new outbreaks are occurring in dozens of countries. Scientists attribute the outbreaks in part to a switch in the vaccine’s formulation. This New York Timesarticle from Sept. 7 explains what happened.
We will cover the topic of polio over the coming weeks, as we near Rotary International’s World Polio Day, on October 24 every year.
DID YOU KNOW? Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.

A Monster Smash Pickleball Tournament
The Rotary Club of Johns Creek-North Fulton Foundation, in partnership with the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA) Foundation, is hosting Monster Smash, our 2024 Pickleball Tournament, on Saturday, October 26, at ITA Atlanta (3110 Presidential Drive, Atlanta 30340, near Spaghetti Junction). Proceeds will benefit individuals and families in the broader North Fulton communities.
The tournament will have a special division for Rotary clubs to compete against each other. Will your club be the winner of the coveted Rotary trophy this year?!

Using Social Media to Raise Rotary’s Profile
As part of our club’s Public Image team, Leo Ladefian (right) reminded members who use social media to promote events and meetings of our local club. His current focus is on taking advantage of Facebook. Leo encourages Facebook users to post and promote Rotary!
Jason Conn told the club about his career in the mortgage industry, noting especially the ups and downs created by two recent economic downturns that transformed much of the industry. He expressed his gratitude for being able to keep business going during hard times, thanks to the Rotary network.
Hannah Palmquist Spoke About Prosecuting Human Trafficking
Following an introduction by Bob Wilson, Hannah Palmquist, Chief of the Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit at State of Georgia Office of the Attorney General, spoke to the club about the efforts of her unit to fight human trafficking in Georgia. She approached the topic from the point of view of the victims of trafficking, explaining the role of manipulation by predators, the conditions that make someone vulnerable, and signs that someone may be trapped in a trafficking situation. She was able to report the successful prosecution of a number of criminals, as well as the rescue and assistance to victims. She attributed her office’s 100% conviction rate to the use and specialization of data. The Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit was created by Governor Brian Kemp in 2019.
