Speaker:
Marion Curry
Rotary Uganda Water Project
Marion Curry retired in 2017 after a 45-year career working in the field of Human Services and Disabilities. During those years she led local programs both non-profit and state funded that were consistently referred to as being innovative. In addition to leading local organizations her career has included work for state level programs (Family Connections and Communities in Schools of Georgia) as well as offering consultation across the U.S. and Canada.

In her retirement she continues to provide consultation to organizations to enhance their ability to support adults with intellectual disabilities to become valued employees. Retirement has provided her the flexibility to pursue Rotary Global projects in Uganda. Her work there as a part of a team lead by a former professional colleague and Rotarian has reinforced her belief in both the value and strength of Rotary as well as reminding her that we as human beings are more alike than different..

Farewell to Pat Pattillo

Pat Pattillo, Rotarian and dynamic community leader passed away recently. His memorial service will be held at Decatur Presbyterian Church on March 10 at 3 pm.

Hooper Gordon Pattillo (96), known worldwide as H.G., Pat, or Papa Pat, leaves a legacy of principled leadership. His ability to embrace the day's needs, plan for the future, and inspire assistance in the execution of his vision ensures that many efforts begun under his guidance will endure after his death.

Born into humble beginnings in 1926 in Klondike, Georgia, H.G. Pattillo learned that hard work, dedication, and creativity, when supported by opportunity, can lift one far beyond one's circumstances.

That insight influenced his co-founding of Leadership Georgia in 1972 with JW Fanning and his service to numerous educational institutions, including the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents (1965-1970); Berry College (Chairman 1970-2000; Trustee, 1970-2000); and Agnes Scott College (Trustee). That understanding led to the establishment of foundations supporting educational programs worldwide through H.G.'s efforts and those of his children.

February Service Project
Calling Volunteers to Decatur High School Saturday, Feb. 25

Noel Maloff exhorts the crowd to join the service project.
Noel Maloof, co-chair of service projects, reminded us about the club’s next service project which is at Decatur High School on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 9 to 11 am. He urged volunteers to join him to for a few short hours to clean out leaves and help beautify the school’s courtyards.

More from Noel: "We'll be cleaning up two courtyards at the school so students can use this outdoor space during the day. Please bring yourself and a pair of gloves. If you have a garden rake or flat shovel bring that too." Noel will bring other tools and materials for our work. Please email Noel at nlmaloof@gmail.com if you plan to be there.

Devastating Fire at Elliott Augustine's Home

On Feb. 17, a fire broke out at Elliott Augustine's home on West Benson St. in Oakhurst, and entirely destroyed the home and contents. The home is a total loss. Thankfully, Elliott was not home, so he was safe. So many friends have reached out to see how they can help and Elliott is overwhelmed with the support he has received. As many of you know, Elliott is self-employed and owns a web design company and a drone company. He wants everyone to know he is open for business and will be actively working each day while this is all sorted out with insurance. He is staying at a hotel in Decatur for the time being.

Many have asked about how they can help. Financial donations may be made via Venmo (preferred method because there are no fees). His Venmo account is @elliott-augustine. A GoFundMe has been set up here. As he settles into a more permanent place, UberEats gift cards would certainly be welcomed. Elliott's e-mail address is elliottinspace@protonmail.com. His mailing address is 372 W. Benson St. Decatur, GA 30030.

Elliott asked us to share this statement: "I love Oakhurst and plan on re-building and staying here. I am extremely thankful of the outpouring of love and support. Please know that I am receiving all texts, voicemails, and social media posts. Please know that I am seeing EVERY message. I am not able to respond to everyone as I’m overwhelmed as you can imagine. Thank you all for your friendship and concern."

State Rep. Billy Mitchell Visits Decatur Rotary

Good friend of Rep. Mitchell, Lawrence Sharp, introduces our speaker.

We were honored to be visited by State Representative for District 88, Mr. Billy Mitchell.  Rep. Mitchell, a fellow Rotarian, had a simple message for both Rotarians and all citizens today.

Citizens who are engaged and involved and advocate for their community get better representation by their elected leaders and government. Those who are not engaged simply do not get the representation they desire. Representative Mitchell stated, “Nothing is more powerful than speaking with your elected representative and saying: ‘I live here . . . . These are my concerns’.”

He also spoke about what makes a good politician and leader: relationships. Bill Clinton impressed him because he met Mr. Clinton several times, but just for a brief moments in time. Each time Mr. Clinton greeted Mitchell warmly by name which amazed him. Mitchell stated that Clinton was a master at building relationships.

The second part of Rep. Mitchell’s talk was about the key issues facing Georgia.

1. Healthcare: It’s truly broken in his opinion. He gave a car analogy: Instead of maintaining the car and using preventative maintenance, we are waiting until it breaks down. This mentality is flooding our emergency rooms and costing us money.

2. Housing: Businesses have been moving to Georgia because of affordable housing, but now this is slowing down due to a lack of options.

3. Citizens Must Advocate: Rep. Mitchell again spoke about how important it is to be an advocate for your community. He mentioned the talent in the room that day and with talent comes responsibility. He reiterated it’s our responsibility  to advocate for economic opportunity, better schools and housing and good government.

Rep. Mitchell closed by taking a poll of the members on how they felt about two hot topics in Georgia right now: legalizing gambling and as well as run-off elections, which he mentioned are very expensive for the state.
