NO BALONEY! Pssst! Here's the Thirsty Thursday Lowdown for Nov. 6
Listen up, all you dolls and daddy-Os! Our next shindig is Nov. 6, 5:30 to 7 pm at that new speakeasy joint, Roaring Social, down in Decatur. But you gotta know the secret knock to get in, see?
First, mosey on up to the main door at 101 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. and stop at the desk.
Whisper to the doorman, "I'm here to check on my safety deposit box, number 1920." He'll slide you a "deposit slip" – keep it under your hat!
Then, head on down the stairs (or take the elevator), past another desk, and swing a right. Just past those closed "cashier windows," keep an eye out on your left for "Deposit Box 1920."
Give that box a good push to open 'er up. Pop in your deposit slip. And just like that, the door to fun will swing wide open for ya. Voilà! Let the good times roll!

Food Drive Starts This Week
Bring canned goods to our meetings, starting this week, to help meet the need in our community. Bob and Dudley will coordinate this effort, a partnership with DEAM (Decatur-area Emergency Assistance Ministry).

Holiday Gift Raffle – A Basket of Cheer
Dud Larus is coordinating a raffle for a holiday gift basket. Donate a bottle of spirits or wine, festive snacks, or other celebratory items, and we will raffle the basket in December.
Bring your items to our meeting, and we will collect them. Thank you!

Christmas Tree Sale – Volunteers Needed
Offering premium Frasier firs ranging from 5 ft. to 10 ft. as well as handmade wreaths and swags, the annual First Christian Church of Decatur Christmas tree sale is a friend- and fundraiser for our community. It’s also a nice way to honor our friend James Brewer-Calvert’s memory.
Trees arrive for unloading on November 23, and there’s lots to do!

Your Club Needs You!
Check out these opportunities for club service:
Treasurer-in-Training | Pete plans to step down from this role next summer, and we need someone to shadow him now and be ready to take over for the 2026-27 year. The treasurer processes funds collected, provides financial reports to the Board, and works closely with the President, Board, and membership. Duties include invoicing members, depositing checks, working with the accounting firm, and approving invoices. This is a big club commitment!
Greeter Scheduler | We need someone to handle scheduling our weekly meeting greeters from October through next June. Duties are to secure volunteers, send weekly reminders, and communicate about such logistics as where to place our meeting sign, etc.
Did you know Rotary supports character education in schools? The Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest asks students to select their own “Law of Life” and write about how it has applied to their lives. In doing so, students reflect deeply and write from the heart about what they think matters most. The contest celebrates the students’ stories and their often profound reflections, and offers significant cash awards to students and teachers.
Want to get involved? We need:
A CLUB COORDINATOR to be the point person with Decatur High School. Duties involve communicating with a DHS teacher about the program and deadlines.
ESSAY JUDGES to read and score essays in February 2026. Teams of three are assigned approximately 48 essays to read and score. Scoring takes approximately 5 to 7 hours; judges have a week to read and score. A virtual team meeting is held to discuss and select School-Level winners and Honorable Mentions.
As a judge, you will see how core values – such as generosity, courage, compassion, perseverance and grit – are experienced by a younger generation.
Doug Robinson announced the dates for our annual MLK service project: January 17-19, 2026. Everyone is invited to participate. We will team up to do home repairs and painting for some elderly residents in the Decatur community. Stay tuned for more info!

Last week, club members came dressed for Halloween!

John Bennett (AKA Bob Belcher) introduced our speaker, Bob Boyd, executive director of the Atlanta Cancer Cares Foundation. Their mission is to raise money to give to cancer patients for living expenses while they undergo treatment. They serve the entire metro area, and recipients of funds aren’t required to be a patient of Atlanta Cancer Cares but must be currently undergoing treatment.
Bob Ettensohn (AKA Jean-Luc Picard) said that we will do another football squares game this month, for the UGA v. Georgia Tech game.
Our club will also participate again in the ShelterBox program for emergency disaster relief. Stay tuned for more details.
