OUR SPEAKER THIS WEEK:
Charles Lutin
Retired ER and Military Flight Physician
Charles D. Lutin is a retired emergency physician and military flight surgeon. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, he attended Vanderbilt University, followed by medical school at Duke University. After completing postgraduate education at East Tennessee State University, he launched what would become a 35-year career in emergency medicine in North Carolina. Charles was bitten by the aviation bug and became licensed as a private pilot in 1983. Eventually, he joined the U.S. Air Force, in 2007, and served as an in-flight surgeon for five years. He has lived in Georgia since separating from the USAF, and has been a member of the Decatur Rotary Club since 2022.

Attend a DeKalb Rotary Council Meeting
The DeKalb Rotary Council meets monthly for fellowship over lunch and to discuss what’s happening with the many clubs in DeKalb County. The council also looks for ways to partner on service projects. In early 2027, the council will host a special breakfast program to recognize DeKalb County STAR teachers and students and to give out Rotarian awards. Stay tuned for more details about that event.
Everyone is invited to attend. Get to know other DeKalb Rotarians and expand your network! Ask Lawrence Sharp or Dud Larus for more information.

Alison Weissinger introduced Superintendent Sauce
Last week, Alison Weissinger introduced our speaker, Dr. Norman Sauce, the Interim Superintendent of the DeKalb County School District. Dr. Sauce spoke about leading the most diverse and one of the largest school systems in the state, emphasizing relationships, receptiveness, and responsiveness and how he puts those ideas into action. He noted that the district is now creating a literacy policy and plan.
Dr. Sauce invited our club to consider service projects with the DeKalb schools, such as mentor projects, internships, or literacy efforts.
Darrell Stallings gave a presentation on E-SPLOST VII >
Darrell Stallings, chief of capital improvements for DCSD, walked the audience through elements of the E-SPLOST VII recommendations the district is presenting to the school board. The E-SPLOST VII will be up for a voter referendum on election day on Nov. 3.
