Shaakira Silvera
& Michelle Kuperman The Global Village Project
As a nonprofit middle school, Global Village Project’s full-day, tuition-free academic program serves refugee girls from all over the world. They provide a three-year program, focused on English language literacy, core academic subjects, and the arts, in the context of a compassionate community and a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) framework. This innovative educational model was designed specifically for refugee girls who have had their education interrupted and have recently been resettled in the United States.

Dud Larus, Steve Szeremeta and Jason Conn
Tom Adams gave the invocation. Dud Larus shared the positive news that our club has been noticed at the district for being active and having a growing, thriving membership. Dud also thanked Charles Lutin for creating the greeter program this year, and noted that managing the greeters would be a great job for a newer club member when Charles rolls off in July.
Jason Conn inducted a new member, Steve Szeremeta (pronounced SHUR-meta), who is a retired attorney.
Maria Alvarez introduced our speaker, Emily Holden. Emily is a stand-up comedian from Decatur who mines the rich field of motherhood and family life for her comedy. She entertained the club members with parenting jokes and referred to herself as the “poor man’s Reese Witherspoon.”
Visitors included Kurt Blumthal, guest of Jason Conn; Nancy Lucas, guest (and wife) of Eric Lucas; Holly Bennett, guest (and wife) of John Bennett; and Rachel Cogburn, current host mom to our Rotary exchange student and also a guest of John Bennett.
