Decatur Rotary Homecoming: A Special Historic Day at the Club

Rev. Dr. Todd Speed recognized the history and wonderful people involved in Rotary over the years in his invocation.

Decatur Rotary Celebrates Its Tradition of Leadership and Innovation at the Homecoming

It was quite a day at Decatur Rotary with a full and enjoyable meeting:
  • A distinguished panel of Decatur Rotarians
  • A talk from President-Elect Dudley Larus on the Rotary International and Decatur Rotary Foundations
  • From our unofficial-official historian, Walt Drake filled us in on key dates and happenings in the club starting in the 1930s and bringing us up to present day
  • A panel discussion answering David Ewing's questions including: Most Memorable Decatur Rotary Program, Favorite Memory, How Decatur Rotary survived the Pandemic, Funny Stories, Challenges, and much more.
  • Jason Conn, our master of ceremonies, reminded all how the club has remained strong over the years . . . through WWII, many other conflicts, the Pandemic and challenging economic times. We have prospered due to the members of the past and members here today.
Jason Conn, the inspiration for the Homecoming Day, began the historic meeting and welcomed past Rotarians several who were past presidents.

Walt Drake started the meeting with many historical facts tracing the club’s origins back to the earliest club meeting locations, club firsts, first female members, first female president, first African American members and president.

Panelists: John Bennett, J. Tom Morgan, Ash Gupta, Tom Adams, Linda Harris, Lyn Menne.

Panelist moderator David Ewing prepares the room for Q&A with our distinguished panelists.

Tom Adams responding to his most memorable Rotary moment by recounting a story of visiting a club as a guest in Germany.

Former President Ash Gupta, talked about the difficulty of keeping the club moving forward during the pandemic.

Thirsty Thursday Recap

There was a hint of spring in the pleasant evening air as 17 Rotary members and their guests gathered on the rooftop at Grindhouse Killer Burgers for drinks and snacks on March 7. (That's why we live in the south, right?) Enjoy these great snaps (thanks, Gloria!) and make plans to join us April 4. Location TBD, but you can be sure it will make the most of an early April evening in Decatur!
