Rotary Youth Exchange Needs Host Families - Deadline Jan. 31

Our club will host an exchange student for the 2025-2026 school year, and we need to identify Decatur host families by January 31. Three families within the City of Decatur School district are needed to host – the student spends about three months at each home and will attend Decatur High. Let John Bennett, Kelly Caudle, or Doug Park know if you or a friend are interested.

Why host a foreign exchange student? Read John Bennett’s piece in Decaturish to find out!

Read the journal entries of our outbound exchange students, Riley in Italy, and Minelli in South Korea and find out what they’re up to.

Meeting Recap

Eric Lucas, left, and speaker Robert Franklin, right.

At our last meeting of 2024, Jamaal Ellis gave the invocation. Eric Lucas introduced our speaker, The Rev. Dr. Robert M. Franklin Jr., who serves as the James T. and Berta R. Laney Chair in Moral Leadership at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University.

Dr. Franklin spoke on the theme of human interconnectedness and interdependence, and about the need for moral leadership to bring divided people together. He recounted the story of the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton and the fateful Antarctica voyage of the Endurance, which became trapped in pack ice. Due to his leadership, Shackleton managed to keep the 27-member crew going, and all made it home alive. Dr. Franklin urged us to find the people who can help us become better versions of ourselves, inspire us, hold us accountable.

Visitors were Mac Speed and Daniela Montoga, guests of the Rev. Todd Speed; Pat Faulk and Thomas Mitchell, guests of Eric Lucas; and Anita Jefferson, guest of Danielle Jones.

Doug Robinson won the weekly wine raffle. Congrats, Doug!
